In the family of metal reflective films, aluminum, silver, and gold are the three most common coating metals. All three have their own strengths and weaknesses.
The reflectivity of silver is highest in the visible light range (up to 95% or more), but it has a fatal weakness - it is highly prone to oxidation in the air, producing dark colored silver sulfide and silver oxide, and the reflectivity rapidly decays over time. Aluminum has better oxidation resistance and lower cost than silver, but its reflectivity can only reach around 85% -90% in the visible light range.
Jin stood at the balance point between the two. The chemical inertness of gold makes it almost resistant to oxidation and discoloration in harsh environments such as humidity and salt spray. Under an environment of 85 ℃/85% RH for 1000 hours, the PET gold-plated reflective film did not show any peeling or discoloration of the coating. Soak in 10% hydrochloric acid solution for 30 days, with a weight loss of less than 0.01%. In terms of reflectivity, gold can reach over 90% in the visible light band, and in the near-infrared to mid infrared band (700nm-10 μ m), the reflectivity is as high as over 98%. The measured data of the gold-plated film reflector also confirms this point - from 450nm to 10000nm, the reflectivity of the gold film climbs from 32% to 98%.
This raises a key question: since silver has a higher reflectivity, why isn't silver chosen for high-end reflective films? The answer is simple - long-term reliability. In long-term outdoor exposure, high humidity environments, aerospace and other scenarios, silver will oxidize and darken within a few months, while gold can remain unchanged for several years. For optical systems that require long-term stable reflection performance, this difference is decisive.
The performance advantages of PET gold-plated reflective film ultimately need to be demonstrated through data.
Reflectance is the most crucial indicator. The PET gold-plated film of Advanced Institute Technology has a reflectivity of over 94% in the 400-700nm wavelength range. The surface reflectivity of the gold layer exceeds 95%, and it can efficiently reflect visible and infrared light. In the near-infrared to mid infrared range (700nm-10 μ m), the reflectivity can reach over 98%.
The adhesion determines whether the coating can firmly grasp the substrate. Through the hundred grid knife test, the adhesion of the PET gold-plated film coating of Advanced Institute Technology has reached 5B level - the highest level in the industry. Even after repeated bending, high-temperature welding, or long-term use, the gold layer will not bubble or peel off.
Environmental reliability is the "moat" of gold plating. There was no peeling or discoloration of the coating after 1000 hours of continuous exposure to 85 ℃/85% RH environment. Tested by salt spray for 960 hours without corrosion. After low-temperature testing at -60 ℃, the elongation at break of the modified PET substrate can be increased by more than 50%. Immerse the coating in liquid nitrogen at -196 ℃ for 1000 hours without any bubbles. These data indicate that PET gold-plated reflective films can maintain stable performance in almost any environment, from the polar regions to the equator, from the ground to space.
Conductivity cannot be ignored either. The surface resistance of the gold plating layer can be as low as 0.1 Ω/□ or less. This means that PET gold-plated reflective film is not only a "mirror", but also a "wire" - in scenarios such as flexible circuit boards and touch screens that require both conductivity and reflection, one material solves two problems.
High end optics and precision instruments are the application areas with the highest technological content of PET gold-plated reflective film. In high-end microscopes, telescopes, laser systems, and other equipment, the optical efficiency of mirrors directly affects imaging quality and energy utilization. Although traditional glass reflectors have excellent optical performance, they are heavy and fragile. The PET gold-plated reflective film has a reflectivity of over 95% in the visible and near-infrared bands, and its lightweight characteristics significantly reduce the weight of the optical system. A certain satellite payload project has reduced the weight of the optical system by 27% by adopting the PET gold-plated reflective film scheme of advanced institute technology. In aerospace optical payloads, every gram of weight savings means an increase in payload or fuel savings.
Consumer electronics and display devices are the fields with the highest usage of PET gold-plated reflective film. The conductive layer of touch screens for devices such as mobile phones and tablets, as well as the reflective backplate of display screens, have dual requirements for the conductivity and reflectivity of materials. The conductivity of PET gold-plated reflective film ensures the sensitivity of touch operation, while high reflectivity can enhance the brightness and contrast of the screen. In flexible circuit boards, PET gold-plated film supports various processes such as cutting, stamping, and hot bending. The PI transition layer technology developed by the advanced institute ensures that the PET gold-plated film maintains reflective stability even when the bending radius is ≤ 2mm. After 100000 bending tests, the performance degradation is less than 3%.
Green buildings and energy-saving curtain walls represent the most socially valuable application direction of PET gold-plated reflective film. In the exterior decoration of large buildings, PET gold-plated reflective film can not only display a unique golden appearance, but also utilize its high reflectivity to reflect sunlight, reduce indoor heat absorption, and lower air conditioning energy consumption. The corrosion resistance of gold ensures that the material is not easily faded or deteriorated during long-term use, extending the service life of building exterior walls. In the global optical reflective film market, the consumer electronics sector accounts for 39% of the total demand, and the demand for in car display and head up display (HUD) reflective films driven by automotive intelligence is also growing rapidly. By 2025, the size of this niche market has reached 780 million US dollars.
No matter how good the performance of gold is, it still needs a suitable 'carrier'. The reason why PET has become the preferred substrate for gold-plated reflective films is not accidental.
PET film itself has excellent mechanical properties - tensile strength, impact resistance, and dimensional stability are all superior to ordinary plastic film. Its chemical resistance allows it to maintain structural integrity even when in contact with media such as acids, bases, and organic solvents. The transmittance of uncoated PET film can reach over 90%. More importantly, PET film supports various processes such as cutting, stamping, and hot bending. In scenarios where large-area and lightweight reflective elements are required, such as solar concentrators and large building curtain walls, the lightweight properties of PET substrates have irreplaceable advantages.
Advanced Institute Technology adopts vacuum magnetron sputtering technology to accurately control the thickness and uniformity of the coating, avoiding chemical pollution problems in traditional electroplating processes. The company supports customized film thickness and coating structure as needed to meet the differentiated needs of different application scenarios from consumer electronics to aerospace.
The global market size of optical reflective films has exceeded 4.82 billion US dollars by 2025. The global metalized film market is expected to reach 3.77 billion US dollars by 2030. Driven by the popularization of foldable screens, lightweighting of aerospace payloads, energy-saving renovation of buildings, and expansion of the photovoltaic industry, PET gold-plated reflective film, which combines high reflectivity, lightweighting, flexibility, and weather resistance, is moving from a "high-end professional material" to a standard option for multi domain light management solutions.
Advanced Institute (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd. will continue to cultivate the field of PET gold-plated reflective film, providing customers with higher performance and more reliable flexible substrate coating solutions through precision coating technology and continuous technological innovation.
