Three engineering truths for selecting copper foil tape: single and double conductivity, thickness and skin effect, oxidation and welding

Time:2026-09-16Number:263

1、 A recurring scene at the EMC rectification site

Copper foil tape selection: Three engineering truths that are easily misjudged

The engineer applied a layer of copper foil tape to the gap of the chassis and retested, and the radiation emission curve remained almost unchanged. After replacing with thicker tape and retesting, the improvement is still limited. The problem often lies not in the tape itself, but in the deviation in the judgment of the three basic engineering problems.

2、 Truth 1: The essential difference between single and double conductors is' which path does the current take '

The copper foil surface of the single conductive copper foil tape is conductive, while the adhesive surface is insulated - the coated surface is non-conductive, and only the copper surface participates in conductivity, hence it is called "single conductive". The adhesive surface of the double conductive copper foil tape is also conductive due to the addition of conductive particles such as nickel. Current can be conducted along the X-Y direction within the copper foil surface or through the adhesive layer to reach the object to be pasted, forming X-Y-Z three-way conductivity.

Core selection logic:Need current to pass through the adhesive layer, choose dual conductivity; No need, menu guide.

The typical application of double conductive tape is to bridge the gap between two conductive casings - the tape is attached to the gap, and the adhesive surface contacts the casings on both sides, forming a bridging path for conductive particles. The PCB grounding pad is connected to the metal frame to release static electricity, and the Z-axis conductivity of the double conductive tape is also required. The nickel particles in the adhesive surface of the double conductive tape also provide magnetic shielding ability, as nickel is a ferromagnetic metal that can guide and absorb magnetic field lines.

The typical application of single conductive tape is to stick copper foil on the inside of a plastic shielding cover as a grounding layer - the adhesive surface is attached to the plastic, and the copper surface faces outward to contact the grounding spring. If double conductive tape is used incorrectly in this situation, the conductive surface may cause a short circuit between circuits that should not be conductive. Visually distinguishable: the adhesive surface of the double conductive tape contains small metal particles, which are slightly uneven; The adhesive surface of the single guide tape is flat and smooth. A more reliable identification method is to use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the two sides of the tape. Both sides of the double conductive type can be tested for conductivity, while the single conductive type only conducts on the copper foil side.

3、 Truth 2: Thickness is not the key to determining high-frequency shielding, skin depth is the key

Many engineers tend to choose thicker copper foil when selecting, believing that 'the more copper, the stronger the shielding'. But in the high-frequency range, this logic does not hold.

When electromagnetic waves propagate in conductors, there is a skin effect - high-frequency currents concentrate and flow in a very thin layer on the surface of the conductor. The skin depth is inversely proportional to the square root of frequency: the higher the frequency, the smaller the skin depth. At a frequency of 1MHz, the skin depth of copper is about 0.066mm; at 10MHz, it is about 0.021mm; and at 100MHz, it is about 0.0066mm. When the thickness of copper foil exceeds several times the skin depth, further increasing the thickness has very limited improvement on shielding effectiveness - the current only flows on the surface, and the internal copper layer does not participate in conduction.

Engineering Conclusion:For common EMI shielding scenarios ranging from 30MHz to 1GHz, a copper foil thickness of 0.018mm to 0.035mm is sufficient to cover the skin depth requirements. 0.065mm or 0.1mm copper foil strikes a balance between flexibility and shielding effectiveness. Thin copper foil is prone to breakage, while thick copper foil is difficult to bond. Thicker copper foil (such as 0.05mm or more) mainly improves mechanical strength and current carrying capacity, rather than high-frequency shielding effectiveness.

It is worth noting that the commercial use of 5G millimeter wave frequency band is driving the evolution of copper foil tape towards thinner direction. The main frequency bands for 5G are concentrated in 3.5GHz and 4.9GHz, while the millimeter wave frequency band reaches 24GHz to 40GHz. At this frequency band, the influence of copper foil surface roughness on shielding effectiveness is significantly amplified - rough surfaces will lengthen the current path, equivalent to increasing resistance. The tape products using ultra-low profile rolled copper foil have a shielding efficiency 12 to 15dB higher than ordinary aluminum foil tape in the 30GHz frequency band. Industry data shows that the evolution of copper foil tape from mainstream thickness of 0.05mm to below 0.03mm is a major direction.

Advanced Institute of TechnologyWe can provide customized products with copper foil substrate thickness covering 0.018mm to 0.05mm, and match the corresponding copper foil surface treatment process according to the customer's high-frequency shielding needs.

4、 Truth 3: The oxide layer of ordinary copper foil is an insulator, while the tin plating layer is not

The chemical properties of copper are relatively active. In humid air, copper surfaces generate cuprous oxide and cuprous oxide - these oxidation products are semiconductors or even insulators that increase contact resistance and disrupt the low impedance continuity of grounding circuits. In scenarios that require soldering connections, the oxidized copper surface cannot be wetted by solder at all. Even if a low resistance contact is established between the copper foil surface and the object being pasted, the oxide layer will gradually increase the contact resistance over several weeks to months, and the shielding effectiveness will deteriorate accordingly.

The core engineering value of tin plated copper foil tape:Not to prevent copper from oxidizing, but to transform the oxidized products from insulators into conductors. The tin dioxide film formed by tin in the air still has good conductivity and is extremely dense and stable, which can effectively block oxygen from continuing to erode inward. The general process involves electroplating 2 to 3 μ m tin layers on both sides of copper foil, which can effectively suppress copper oxidation in conventional environments.

The tin layer also endows the copper foil surface with excellent weldability. The melted tin during welding can firmly fix the welded part on the tinned copper foil tape, ensuring welding quality and connection stability. Tin plated copper foil can be reflow soldered and is suitable for automated production lines that require soldering connections. After plating a tin layer on the surface of copper foil, its service life can be extended by more than three times compared to ordinary copper foil tape, and it is suitable for harsh working conditions such as humidity and high corrosion.

Comparison Dimensions Ordinary copper foil tape Tin plated copper foil tape
Conductivity of oxide layer Poor (Cu ₂ O/CuO is a semiconductor/insulator) Better (SnO ₂ still has conductivity)
weldability Unable to wet after oxidation Excellent, can be directly soldered or reflow soldered
Contact resistance stability Deterioration over time Long term stability (contact resistance can be as low as 0.001-0.005 Ω)
Shielding Effectiveness 60–90dB 78–100dB(30MHz–1GHz)
Corrosion resistance general Excellent (suitable for high salt spray and high humidity environments)
Applicable scenarios Short term/indoor applications Long term reliability, welded connections, harsh environments

Advanced Institute Technology's copper foil tape products use high-purity rolled copper foil substrates with a purity of over 99.95%, with copper surface resistance ≤ 0.02 Ω/□ and adhesive surface resistance ≤ 0.09 Ω. The dual conductive vertical resistance can be controlled within ≤ 0.05 Ω, and the tin plated contact resistance can be as low as 0.001-0.005 Ω. The product supports die-cutting processing into irregular shapes, and the width can be customized within the range of 5mm to 500mm.

5、 Three key issues in selection decision-making

Engineers should confirm three issues in sequence when selecting copper foil tape.

  • Firstly, the demand for current path.Does the current need to pass through the adhesive layer? Yes, choose dual guidance; No need, menu guide. This step determines the fundamental type of tape and is also a prerequisite for all subsequent parameter selections.
  • Secondly, the target frequency matches the thickness.Choose 0.018mm to 0.035mm copper foil for 30MHz to 1GHz scenarios to cover the required skin depth; Attention should be paid to the surface roughness of copper foil in high-frequency scenarios above GHz, and ultra-low profile rolled copper foil should be selected; For scenarios that require mechanical strength and current carrying capacity, a thickness of 0.05mm or more can be chosen.
  • Thirdly, environmental and process requirements.Ordinary copper foil tape can be used for short-term indoor applications; Tin plated copper foil tape should be selected for long-term reliability, welding connections, or facing high salt spray and high humidity environments. Tin plating layer simultaneously solves the two shortcomings of oxidation corrosion and welding reliability, and is a necessary choice in harsh environments.

6. Conclusion

Copper foil tape may seem simple - a roll of copper foil, a layer of adhesive, and a release paper, but the engineering decisions involved are not simple. The choice between single conductor and double conductor determines whether the current path is controllable; The matching of thickness and skin depth determines the effectiveness of high-frequency shielding; The presence or absence of tin plating determines whether the contact resistance remains stable or continues to deteriorate during long-term service.

Understanding these three engineering truths - rather than simply "choosing thicker" or "choosing better conductive" - is the key to elevating copper foil tape from "easy to stick" to "precise decision-making".
