Tin plated copper foil tape · Anti oxidation and weldable EMI shielding solution
Copper foil tape is one of the most familiar tools for EMC engineers - tearing off release paper, sticking it on, compacting it, and completing a shielding or grounding operation in three seconds. But there are two problems that often only come to light a few months later: the surface of the copper foil becomes darker and the solder cannot be soldered on.
The chemical properties of copper are relatively active. In humid air, copper reacts with oxygen, water vapor, and carbon dioxide to form cuprous oxide, copper oxide, and even green basic copper carbonate on its surface. The oxide layer is a semiconductor or even an insulator - it increases contact resistance, destroys the low impedance continuity of the grounding circuit, and leads to a deterioration of shielding effectiveness over time. In scenarios that require soldering connections, the oxidized copper surface cannot be wetted by solder at all.
Core proposition:The core question that tinned copper foil tape needs to answer is: how to maintain the high conductivity of copper while making the tape withstand the test of time and weld reliably?
Almost all metals oxidize in air, but the properties of the oxidation products vary greatly.
copper oxide——Copper oxide and cuprous oxide are semiconductors and even insulators. Their existence means an increase in contact resistance and a decrease in conductivity efficiency. The shielding effectiveness of copper foil tape depends on the low resistance contact between the copper foil surface and the object being pasted, and the oxide layer directly damages this contact interface.
Tin oxideIt's completely different. The tin dioxide film formed by tin in air is conductive - although its conductivity is not as good as pure tin, it is far superior to copper oxide. More importantly, this layer of tin oxide film is extremely dense and stable, effectively blocking oxygen from further eroding the copper substrate inward. The general process involves electroplating 2-3 μ m tin layers on both sides of copper foil, which can effectively suppress copper oxidation in a conventional environment.
Engineering Logic:This is the underlying engineering logic of tin plated copper foil tape: not to prevent copper from "oxidizing", but to replace copper oxide with tin oxide - the tin oxide layer has much better conductivity than the copper oxide layer. The shielding effectiveness of copper foil tape reaches 78-100dB (30MHz-1GHz), and the presence of tin plating layer keeps this shielding performance stable in long-term use.
In addition to oxidation resistance, the tin plating layer also provides excellent weldability for the copper foil surface. Tin is one of the most commonly used soldering metals in electronic manufacturing. Solder can quickly wet the surface of the tin layer and form a reliable metallurgical bond. The tin plated coating on both sides of the tape foil provides excellent weldability and has oxidation and corrosion resistance.
Tin plated copper foil tape has a tin coating on its surface, making the welding process easier and more stable. When welding, the melted tin can firmly fix the welded part on the tinned copper foil tape, ensuring welding quality and connection stability. Tin plated copper foil can be reflow soldered and is suitable for automated production lines that require soldering connections. The tin content of the tin plating layer can be adjusted according to the customer's welding process requirements.
Part of the tin plated copper foil tape is treated with embossing technology on the surface of the copper foil. The embossed structure can pierce or cut through the adhesive layer during tape bonding, establishing a more reliable contact between the copper foil backing and the application substrate. When the embossed backing edge cuts through the adhesive layer, contact between the backing and the application substrate is established.
The engineering value of embossed design:It solves the problem of poor contact caused by the thickness of the conductive pressure-sensitive adhesive layer during bonding. By "piercing" the adhesive layer through the embossed structure, reliable conductive contact is ensured between the copper foil and the substrate, while the tin plating layer provides continuous antioxidant protection. The combination of embossing and tin plating unifies "contact reliability" and "long-term oxidation resistance" in the same product.
| characteristics | Tin plated copper foil tape | Ordinary copper foil tape |
|---|---|---|
| Copper foil surface conductivity | conduct electricity | conduct electricity |
| Adhesive surface conductivity | Conductive (dual conductive) or non-conductive (single conductive) | Conductive (dual conductive) or non-conductive (single conductive) |
| Antioxidant activity | Excellent (tin layer protection) | Poor (copper is prone to oxidation and blackening) |
| Conductivity of oxide layer | Better (SnO ₂ conductivity) | Poor (Cu ₂ O/CuO insulation) |
| weldability | Excellent (can be directly soldered or reflow soldered) | Poor (unable to wet oxidized surface) |
| Corrosion resistance | Excellent (suitable for high salt spray and high moisture environments) | Ordinary |
| service life | Extended compared to ordinary copper foil | Deterioration over time |
| typical scenario | Requires welding, harsh environments, and long-term reliability | Short term/indoor applications |
The core advantage of tin plated copper foil tape lies in its long-term reliability - the tin layer simultaneously solves the two shortcomings of copper oxidation corrosion and welding reliability, making it irreplaceable in scenarios that require long-term service, welding connections, or harsh environments.
Based on industry public information, the key performance indicators of tin plated copper foil tape are as follows:
Shielding EffectivenessIt is the core indicator for measuring electromagnetic shielding capability. The shielding effectiveness of tinned copper foil tape in the frequency range of 30MHz-1GHz can reach 78-100dB. Some products have a shielding effectiveness of 85-95dB (1GHz). A shielding effectiveness of 78-100dB means that over 99.99999% of electromagnetic wave energy is effectively attenuated.
Conductivity performance.Conductive impedance with adhesive surface ≤ 0.05 Ω. The contact resistance can be as low as 0.001-0.005 Ω. The conductivity exceeds 95%.
Adhesive force.The adhesive strength is usually ≥ 1.2kg (180 ° peel test).
Temperature resistance.The applicable temperature range is usually -30 ° C to 130 ° C.
Substrate purity. The substrate is made of 99.99% high-purity rolled copper foil.
Thickness of tin plating layer. The tin plating layer is usually 0.002mm (2 μ m).

Tin plated copper foil tape can be used as a shielding layer for data communication cables, high-definition TV data cables, and other scenarios, effectively resisting electromagnetic interference. Application in communication cables can improve signal transmission stability.
Tin plated copper foil tape is particularly suitable for high salt spray and high moisture environments - which are application scenarios that ordinary copper foil tape cannot handle. After tin plating on the surface of copper foil, the copper foil tape is less prone to oxidation, extending its service life and expanding the range of copper foil use. In outdoor static discharge scenarios, the service life is longer.
Military equipment and aerospace electronics have extremely strict requirements for long-term reliability and environmental adaptability. Tin plated copper foil tape has passed UL certification and meets RoHS environmental requirements, and is widely used in military shielding materials.
The surface of tinned copper foil tape can be directly soldered or reflow soldered, making it suitable for grounding and EMI shielding assembly in automated production lines. This is also applicable in scenarios such as high-frequency transformers that require welding.
Tin plated copper foil tape can be used for the pins or contact parts of various terminals, connectors, relays, and other components to improve solderability, reduce contact resistance, and prevent copper substrate oxidation.
The Yanbo brand tin plated copper foil tape launched by Advanced Institute (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd. uses high-purity rolled copper foil substrate, with a dense and uniform tin plating layer on the surface, which combines conductivity, corrosion resistance, and weldability. The product has antioxidant properties, easy welding characteristics, and good electrical and thermal conductivity. Tin plating layer can effectively protect copper foil tape, increase its corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and extend the service life of the material. Double sided conductive tin plated copper foil tape can resist acid and alkali corrosion, maintain stable conductivity, and is suitable for various harsh working environments.
Selection warning:If the application scenario involves welding, high humidity, salt spray, or long-term reliability requirements, the oxidation problem of ordinary copper foil tape may not be exposed until several months later. At this point, the cost difference of tin plated copper foil tape is much smaller than the cost of rework and repair.
The essence of tin plated copper foil tape is to replace copper oxide with tin oxide - the tin oxide layer has much better conductivity than the copper oxide layer. It does not prevent copper from oxidizing, but rather transforms the oxidized product from an insulator to a conductor. Copper is responsible for shielding electrical signals and conducting connections, while tin is responsible for corrosion protection, weldability, and low contact resistance - the two complement each other in the same material system.
Understanding the material selection logic - not based on conductivity, but on the conductivity of oxidation products - can better reveal the technical essence of tin plated copper foil tape than simply comparing parameters. In engineering scenarios that require balancing conductivity, shielding effectiveness, long-term weather resistance, and weldability, tin plated copper foil tape provides a fully validated and reliable path.
