Breaking down the cognitive barrier that 'plastic cannot be coated with metal'
In cutting-edge fields such as flexible electronics, smart wearables, automotive lightweighting, and healthcare,Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)With its excellent elasticity, wear resistance, and biocompatibility, it has become an irreplaceable core substrate. However, many clients encounter the same problem during project development: "Can TPU be coated with metal? Can we create a metallic effect? ”The answer is - yes, but not traditional 'electroplating'.
Advanced Institute (Shenzhen) Technology Co., Ltd. has been deeply involved in TPU surface functionalization for many years and has mastered the technology fromSurface activation → Vacuum coating → Metal ink coating → Composite processOur full chain solution helps you achieve the metallization function and decorative needs of TPU substrates.
Non-conductive material
TPU itself is non-conductive and cannot be used as a cathode for electroplating.
Low temperature resistance
Polyester TPU has a temperature resistance of less than 150 ° C, while polyether TPU has a lower upper limit (about 80-100 ° C). Traditional electroplating solutions require 80-90 ° C, which can easily lead to thermal degradation.
Chemical sensitivity
Strong acid/alkaline electroplating solution can corrode TPU molecular chains, and the current action exacerbates the degradation risk.
Low surface energy
The surface energy of TPU is only 30-40 mN/m, and the adhesion of the metal layer is extremely poor. Direct plating will inevitably peel off.
Conclusion: Traditional electroplating and chemical plating are not feasible on TPU.
After our professional corona/plasma/chemical activation pretreatment, the TPU surface can be vacuum evaporated with the following metal thin layers (usually<100 nm in thickness):
Aluminum (Al)- Electromagnetic shielding, gas barrier/typical applications: flexible FPC shielding layer, food and drug packaging barrier film
Silver (Ag)- High conductivity, touch sensing/wearable device conductive touch film, flexible sensor
Copper (Cu)- Flexible circuits, EMI shielding/flexible PCB, electromagnetic shielding packaging
Gold (Au)Corrosion resistance, biocompatibility/high-end biosensing, medical electrodes
Chromium/Nickel (Cr/Ni)Decorative mirror effect/automotive interior trim, high-end shoe materials
Advanced Institute Technology Process Control: The vacuum coating temperature is strictly<80 ° C to ensure zero damage to the TPU substrate.
Developed specifically for this purposeTPU based metal ink(including aluminum powder/copper powder/stainless steel powder/silver nanoparticles), metalization effect is achieved through screen printing, spraying, roller coating and other processes:
Silver metallic lusterAluminum powder based TPU ink/3C shell, high-end shoe material decoration
Conductive lineSilver nanoparticle conductive ink/flexible touch panel, pressure sensor
Imitation metal textureCopper powder/stainless steel powder ink/automotive interior trim strips, electronic product casings
⚡ Key technology: Equipped with isocyanate based primer and silane coupling agent treatment, the adhesion can reach over 4B in the hundred grid test, far exceeding the performance of ordinary metal paint on TPU.
For large-scale production scenarios, we recommendHot pressing composite processTPU film aluminum foil/copper foil → hot pressing bonding. Balancing metal properties and TPU flexibility, with low cost, high efficiency, and stable yield.
️ Flexible LED display
TPU coated with Al/Ag reflective layer → enhances brightness and flexibility
⌚ wearable devices
Screen printed Ag ink touch film → bendable, highly sensitive touch
High end footwear and clothing
TPU aluminum powder ink decoration → metallic luster, bending resistance and no cracking
Automotive Interior
Vacuum coated Al TPU decorative strip → Lightweight metal like texture
medical equipment
Carbon doped/thin metal coated TPU → anti-static and electromagnetic shielding
barrier packaging
Aluminum coated TPU film → O ₂/H ₂ O barrier performance improved by 10 times
️ process temperature- Full process control<100 ° C, preferably polyether TPU (stronger hydrolysis resistance)
Surface Treatment- It must be activated by corona/plasma/chemical primer, otherwise the metal layer will fall off
️ Outdoor use- Al is easy to passivate but still acceptable; Ag is prone to sulfurization and blackening, requiring the addition of a protective layer
Ink Selection- Ordinary metal paint ≠ TPU special ink, with varying degrees of adhesion
Substrate selection- Wet and hot environment → Choose polyether TPU; High temperature environment → Choose polyester TPU (slightly higher temperature resistance)
