What is edge computing?
Edge computing refers to the use of an open platform integrating network, computing, storage and application core capabilities to provide the nearest service on the side close to the object or data source. Its applications are initiated on the edge side, generating faster network service responses and meeting the basic needs of the industry in real-time business, application intelligence, security, and privacy protection. Edge computing is a computing method that deploys workloads at the edge, compared with traditional centralized general computing.
In recent years, edge computing has become very popular, mainly because 5G is developing faster and faster, including more and more intelligent terminal devices, resulting in more and more demands for the sinking of edge computing business. If all processing is centralized, it will be difficult to meet the growth of large-scale edge intelligent devices. Edge computing is now widely used in various industries, such as automobiles, transportation, energy, etc. To sum up, edge computing is to make computing closer to users or data sources.
1. At AT&T in the United States, they first put forward the concept of "edge computing", whose main purpose is to solve the problem of application network latency in the 5G era.
2 5G and edge computing are inseparable technologies. They can significantly improve the performance of applications and process large amounts of data in real time.
3. 5G increases the speed to ten times that of 4G, while mobile edge computing is introduced into the network through computing functions, so that the delay is closer to the end user, thus reducing the delay.
Edge computing
Edge computing decomposes large services that were originally handled entirely by central nodes (central servers) into smaller and more manageable parts, which are dispersed to edge nodes (edge computing servers) for processing. The edge node is closer to the user terminal device, which can speed up data processing and transmission and reduce latency. Therefore, 5G is even more inseparable from edge computing.
Why 5G needs edge computing:
01 Inherent to 5G standard
Because edge computing is the only way to meet the required delay goals (1 millisecond network delay), these goals cannot be achieved by improving the radio interface alone.
02 Gradual Approach for Operators to Deploy 5G
5G has entered a slow cycle, which means that the coverage of "all 5G" is not sufficient to cultivate an ecosystem for new applications. However, the edge may cultivate the 5G market before widespread coverage

In the edge computing scenario, the data is more diversified, including text, voice, image, video, etc., and the demand for heterogeneous computing increases

Edge computing requires a unified O&M management interface for heterogeneous servers and automated business deployment
03 Requirements for environmental matching
The environment for deploying edge servers is relatively complex, with significant differences in space, temperature, load capacity, power systems, and other aspects.
So how to deploy edge servers?
1、 In terms of environmental adaptability
Previously, server deployment environments were mostly indoors. Edge servers may propose new requirements, such as wall mounted design requirements. The residential buildings are 220 V civil power, and the power that can withstand is certain, which may not solve the problem of power consumption increase of edge computing servers.
2、 In terms of server structure
The previous data server power/fan system was placed behind the device. After the deployment of edge service areas, there is mostly a wall behind the servers, which brings new requirements to the architecture of edge servers.
3、 In terms of operation and maintenance
Previously, data centers were maintained by dedicated personnel, with maintenance time and nodes scattered. After the scale deployment of edge computing servers, it is impossible to assign special personnel to take charge, which brings challenges to operators' operation and maintenance.
4、 In terms of safety
In the past, base stations were either iron boxes or located in computer rooms. Now the edge computing server may be outdoors, and the security is poor, which is easy to be stolen, robbed, and vandalized. How operators can ensure the data security of edge data centers also needs to be considered
