Grounding topology trap of dual conductive copper foil tape: why "multi-point grounding" may be worse than "single point grounding" at high frequencies

Time:2026-10-30Number:27

In the grounding design of shielded cavities, the use of double conductive copper foil tape is usually done by "sticking a circle along the seam" or "sticking a piece in each corner". The intuition behind this approach is simple: the more grounding points, the more complete the grounding, and the more reliable the shielding.

In low-frequency and DC scenarios, this intuition generally holds true. But in the GHz frequency band, the effectiveness of the grounding loop is no longer determined by the "number of grounding points", but by the parasitic inductance and loop area of the return path. Unreasonable multi-point grounding may result in poorer shielding effectiveness than a single point grounding with the smallest designed circuit area.

High frequency grounding refers to the "circuit inductance", not the "number of grounding points"

The return path of high-frequency current follows the principle of minimum impedance, rather than the geometrically shortest path. When the shielding cavity is connected to the ground plane at multiple positions through double conductive tape, each grounding point forms an independent return path. There may be a potential difference between these paths, especially when there is a resonant mode inside the cavity. The ground loop between different grounding points will couple noise, which will actually damage the shielding integrity of the cavity.

There is an easily overlooked detail in the specification sheet of 3M 1181: its shielding effectiveness averages 66 dB in the range of 300 kHz – 2.5 GHz, and can reach over 80 dB at 1 GHz. However, the labeling of the adhesive layer contact resistance includes the condition of "requiring pressure to ensure conductivity". This means that the actual contact state of the tape at different positions on the cavity wall is not consistent, and the impedance dispersion between the grounding points will be converted into a part of the ground loop at high frequencies. An increase in the number of grounding points does not automatically equal a decrease in the total impedance of the return path; If there is a significant impedance difference between the grounding points, multiple grounding points can instead guide the reflux current to form an unexpected loop inside the cavity.

Dielectric properties of adhesive layer: high-frequency parasitic parameters masked by "conduction"

The Z-axis conductivity of the double conductive tape depends on the conductive particles in the adhesive layer, but the dielectric matrix between the particles in the adhesive layer is not "electrically transparent" at high frequencies. Industry technical analysis clearly points out that the conductive adhesive layer of dual conductive tape is not an ideal conductor. At high frequencies, the dielectric matrix (Dk, Df) between conductive particles in the adhesive layer will affect the overall impedance, and unstable Dk/Df will introduce parasitic capacitance, changing the characteristic impedance of the transmission line.

The role of this parasitic parameter in the grounding circuit is dual. On the one hand, the parasitic capacitance of the adhesive layer provides a "bypass" path for high-frequency noise, which does not exist at low frequencies but may alter the distribution of reflux current in the GHz frequency band. On the other hand, if there are intra batch or inter batch fluctuations in the adhesive layer Dk/Df between different grounding points, the high-frequency impedance of each grounding point will no longer be consistent, and the potential distribution between the cavity walls will become unpredictable.

Frontier products control the high-frequency dielectric fluctuation of the adhesive layer within 5% by optimizing the dispersion of fillers and resin systems, but this indicator is usually not provided in the specifications of ordinary double conductive tapes. If we only focus on "whether the adhesive surface is connected or not" and "vertical resistance" when selecting, the stability of the high-frequency grounding circuit is actually in an unverified state.

Surface roughness of copper foil: amplified losses at the circuit level

The influence of copper foil surface roughness on insertion loss may only differ by a few dB on a single grounding path. But in a multi-point grounded cavity structure, this loss will be superimposed and amplified at the circuit level.

The skin effect concentrates the current in the GHz frequency band on a very thin layer on the surface of the copper foil. Extending the current path on a rough surface effectively increases the series resistance. Research has shown that at 10 GHz, the loss caused by roughness can be more than 20% higher than that of smooth surfaces. For the shielding cavity of 77 GHz radar or high-speed SerDes, if the copper foil substrate of the double conductive tape is selected as a high roughness standard electrolytic copper foil, the high-frequency impedance of each grounding point includes this additional surface loss; When multiple grounding points are connected in parallel, the improvement in total return impedance will be offset by the increase in single point impedance.

3M 1181 uses annealed soft copper foil with a total thickness of 0.066 mm, copper foil substrate of 0.036 mm, and adhesive layer of 0.030 mm. Its shielding effectiveness reaches over 80 dB at 1 GHz, indicating that under reasonable layout, dual conductive tape can provide usable high-frequency shielding; But the premise of this data is that the adhesive layer is fully pressed and the layout of the grounding points is reasonable, rather than "automatically established after a full circle".

The condition for "single point grounding" to become reasonable again at high frequencies

In low-frequency analog circuits, single point grounding is used to avoid ground loops. In high-frequency cavity shielding, the rationalization of single point grounding comes from a different logic: when the number of grounding points is reduced to the designed minimum, the geometric shape of the return path becomes controllable, the loop area can be minimized, and parasitic inductance decreases accordingly.

For the application of double conductive copper foil tape in shielding cavities, the feasible topology judgment is to prioritize setting grounding points at the position with the highest current density on the cavity wall (usually near the noise source or gap), rather than uniformly distributing them. If the distance between grounding points is greater than a certain proportion of the wavelength corresponding to the highest operating frequency (such as λ/20), the potential difference between the cavity walls may not be effectively homogenized. In this case, increasing the number of grounding points is meaningful; If the spacing is already small enough, continuing to increase the grounding point will only increase the uncertainty of the ground loop and will not improve the return path.

Selection and layout judgment based on circuit topology

Firstly, draw the reflux path and then determine the number and location of grounding points

Don't start from 'sticking a few pieces', but start from' where high-frequency noise current comes from and needs to return to '. The grounding point should be set at the location with the highest reflux current density, rather than evenly distributed or fully attached along the joint. For cavity seam shielding, continuous bonding is reasonable in specific scenarios, but this rationality depends on the seam itself being a part of the reflux path, rather than "sticking a few extra pieces just in case".

Secondly, incorporate the stability of the adhesive layer Dk/Df into high-frequency selection, rather than just confirming the vertical resistance

The Z-axis conductivity of the double conductive tape is a necessary condition, but not a sufficient condition for high-frequency grounding. Require suppliers to provide data on the dielectric constant and loss factor of the adhesive layer in the target frequency band, or at least provide measured insertion loss curves for structures containing adhesive layers. Products with adhesive layer dielectric fluctuation controlled within 5% have better high-frequency impedance consistency at each grounding point in multi-point grounding scenarios, and lower ground loop risk.

Thirdly, prioritize selecting low roughness copper foil substrates in high-frequency cavities and confirm the consistency of the lamination process

The influence of copper foil surface roughness on single point impedance will be superimposed in multi-point grounding structures. For cavity shielding above 3 GHz, rolled copper foil or ultra-low profile electrolytic copper foil should be preferred, and suppliers should be required to provide surface roughness (Rz) data. At the same time, the condition that the contact resistance of the adhesive layer "needs to be pressurized to ensure conductivity" means that the consistency of the bonding process directly determines the dispersion of the impedance of each grounding point. During the sample stage, the overlap resistance of multiple grounding points should be measured under actual production line conditions, rather than just sampling one piece.

Advanced Institute (Shenzhen) Technology Co., LtdThe dual conductive copper foil tape product line covers electrolytic copper foil and rolled copper foil substrates. The adhesive layer is filled with conductive particles to achieve Z-axis conductivity, providing data on the dielectric constant and loss factor of the adhesive layer in the target frequency band, as well as options for copper foils with different surface roughness levels.

The product supports rolls, sheets, and precision die-cutting, and can provide die-cutting form suggestions based on the grounding point layout of the shielding cavity. For more technical information, please visithttp://www.avanzado.cn/.
