Five common misconceptions in selecting copper foil tape: why did you stick the tape and still fail the EMC test?

Time:2026-09-10Number:191

1、 Why hasn't the shielding effect improved after applying copper foil tape?

Selection and Use of Copper Foil Tape: Analysis of Five Major Engineering Misconceptions

At the EMC rectification site, it is common to see engineers sticking a layer of copper foil tape on the gaps of the chassis and retesting with high expectations, but the radiation emission curve remains almost unchanged.

The problem often lies not in the tape itself, but in several common misconceptions in selection and use. Copper foil tape may seem simple - a roll of copper foil, a layer of adhesive, and a release paper - but to make it function correctly in the right scenario, it requires understanding several key engineering logics.

Core Tip:Although copper foil tape is simple, there are multiple common misconceptions in its selection and use. Understanding these misconceptions is a prerequisite for correct use.

2、 Misconception 1: The thicker the copper foil, the better the shielding

Many engineers tend to choose thicker copper foil when selecting, believing that 'the more copper, the stronger the shielding'. But in the high-frequency range, this logic does not hold.

The propagation of electromagnetic waves in conductors exhibits a skin effect - high-frequency currents concentrate on a very thin layer on the surface of the conductor and flow, rather than being uniformly distributed across the entire cross-section. The skin depth (δ) is inversely proportional to the square root of the frequency: the higher the frequency, the smaller the skin depth. At a frequency of 1GHz, the skin depth of copper is approximately 2 μ m.

This means that when the thickness of the copper foil exceeds several times the skin depth, further increasing the thickness has very limited improvement on shielding effectiveness - the current has only flowed on the surface, and the internal copper layer has not participated in conduction. For most civilian EMI shielding scenarios (30MHz – 1GHz), a copper foil thickness of 0.018mm – 0.035mm is sufficient to cover the skin depth requirements. Thicker copper foil (such as 0.050mm or more) mainly improves mechanical strength and current carrying capacity, rather than high-frequency shielding effectiveness.

Selection logic:High frequency shielding focuses on surface conductivity and does not blindly pursue thickness; When mechanical support or high current carrying is required, thicker copper foil should be prioritized.

3、 Misconception 2: Conductive adhesive is always better than non-conductive adhesive

The adhesive surface of double conductive copper foil tape contains nickel particles and can conduct Z-axis, which sounds "more advanced" than single conductive tape. But 'more advanced' does not mean 'more applicable'.

The core difference between single conductor and double conductor lies in whether the current needs to pass through the adhesive layer. In the following scenarios, single navigation is a safer and more economical choice:

  • Stick the copper foil on the inside of the plastic shielding cover as a grounding layer - the adhesive surface is attached to the plastic, and the copper surface faces outward to contact the grounding spring. The insulation of the adhesive surface will not introduce any unexpected electrical paths.
  • 360 ° surround shielding of the cable sheath - the copper surface contacts the shielding braided layer to complete grounding, and the rubber surface insulation will not cause short circuits.
  • In situations where layered isolation is required to prevent short circuits between adjacent conductive layers.

In the following scenarios, dual guidance is the correct choice:

  • Crossing the gap between two conductive casings requires the adhesive surface to conduct electricity simultaneously with both sides of the casings.
  • The PCB grounding pad is connected to the metal frame and requires Z-axis conductivity to complete grounding.

Selection warning:Double conductors are used where single conductors should be used, and conductive surfaces may cause short circuits between circuits that should not be conductive; A single conductor was used in the area where dual conductors were needed, but the current could not penetrate the adhesive layer and the grounding resistance exceeded the standard.

4、 Misconception 3: Copper foil tape can replace metal shielding covers

Copper foil tape is often used for "temporary" shielding, but some engineers use it as a permanent shielding solution, resulting in long-term reliability issues.

The engineering positioning of copper foil tape and metal shielding cover has essential differences:

Dimension Copper foil tape Metal shielding cover
mechanical strength Low (copper foil is prone to tearing and scratching) tall
Ground resistance Dependent on adhesive surface contact, long-term deterioration may occur Welding or screw connection, stable
Long-term reliability Affected by aging and oxidation of the adhesive layer tall
Installation Method Manual bonding, consistency affected by operation Standardized Assembly
Applicable scenarios On site rectification, temporary shielding, and partial repair Mass production products, permanent shielding

Engineering positioning:The core value of copper foil tape lies in "quick verification" and "local repair" - it allows engineers to determine whether a gap or wire harness is an interference source within a few minutes. But if the verification is effective, the mass production plan should consider more reliable shielding structures (shielding cover, conductive pad, welding shielding layer) instead of relying on manually attached tape.

5、 Misconception 4: Just stick it on, no surface treatment required

The shielding effectiveness of copper foil tape depends on the low resistance contact between the copper foil surface and the object being pasted. If there is an oxide layer, oil stains, dust, or release agent on the surface of the sticker, the contact resistance may increase by several orders of magnitude, and the shielding effectiveness will significantly decrease accordingly.

The correct fitting operation includes:

  • Clean the surface:Wipe the surface of the sticker with alcohol or isopropanol to remove oil and dust.
  • Apply pressure:After bonding, apply uniform pressure with a scraper or roller to ensure that the adhesive layer fully wets the surface of the object being bonded, and that the conductive particles (double conductive type) or copper foil surface (single conductive type) form reliable contact with the substrate.
  • Avoid touching the adhesive surface:The grease on the fingers can contaminate the adhesive surface, reducing adhesion and conductivity.

These operations may seem simple, but they are often overlooked during on-site rectification, resulting in the saying 'if you stick it, you don't stick it'.

6、 Misconception 5: Copper foil tape will not oxidize

The chemical properties of copper are relatively active. In humid air, copper reacts with oxygen, water vapor, and carbon dioxide to form cuprous oxide, copper oxide, and even green basic copper carbonate on its surface. The oxide layer is a semiconductor or even an insulator - it increases contact resistance, destroys the low impedance continuity of the grounding circuit, and leads to a deterioration of shielding effectiveness over time.

In scenarios that require long-term reliability, ordinary copper foil tape is not the optimal choice. Tin plated copper foil tape provides antioxidant protection through a tin layer - the tin oxide layer (SnO ₂) still has conductivity, and the tin layer can be soldered. Nickel plated copper foil tape provides anti-corrosion protection and magnetic shielding capability through a nickel layer. The long-term reliability of both in humid, salt spray, or industrial pollution environments is significantly better than that of ordinary copper foil tape.

Selection logic:Ordinary copper foil tape can be used for short-term rectification or indoor dry environment; Tin plated or nickel plated copper foil tape should be selected for long-term service, harsh environments, or scenarios that require welding connections.

7、 Conclusion

Copper foil tape is one of the most basic and convenient materials in the EMC engineer toolbox. But 'easy' does not mean 'simple' - from thickness selection to the choice between single and double conductors, from surface treatment to long-term reliability evaluation, every step affects the final shielding effect.

Understanding the relationship between skin effect and thickness, the engineering boundary between single and double conductors, the positioning difference between tape and shielding cover, the impact of surface treatment on contact resistance, and the long-term risk of copper oxidation - these are the key to elevating copper foil tape from "easy to stick" to "precise decision-making". In EMC rectification, correct selection and usage logic are often more effective than applying multiple layers of tape.
